Annual Summer Cinema Party (formerly known as the Drive-In)
September 11, 2010 at 7:30 pm
This year's version of my summer cinema party is no longer being billed as a Drive-In, simply because it is not a Drive-In. Still adhering to the double feature format, the screening included Lord of the Flies (1963) and Son of Captain Blood (1962). The event devolved into frenzied island madness resulting from Gerry Bivens' deadly Mai Tais.
MEXICO!
July - August 2010
I had a harrowing adventure down the west coast of Mexico to celebrate my 30th birthday. I spent a week on the beach in Mizunte and Zipolite with Kelly Monico, after her exhibitions in the city of Oaxaca. We finished the trip with a few frenetic days in Mexico city. Museo Rudolfo Tamayo, Palacio de la Bellas Artes, Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Las Canals de Xochimilco, las tiendas, las calles, el ambiente. Awesome. View some photos from the trip featured in incidentals.

Covering Ground at Robischon Gallery Annex
Opening: June 30, 2010
RG opens its first exhibition at the Annex, in conjunction with Denver’s Biennial of the Americas. “Covering Ground,” is a group exhibition of photography and video installation by eleven regional, national and international artists – including photographic works by two artists featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver’s “Energy Effects: Art and Artifacts from the Landscape of Glorious Excess;” Washington, D.C. artist Jim Sanborn and Guadalajara-based Gonzalo Lebrija. Also invited are New York artists Jeanne Liotta, William Lamson and the collaborative duo Gibson + Recoder presenting video installation works along with Italian photographer Guido Guidi, English-born Richard Pare exhibiting small and large-scale photography alongside Colorado artists Chuck Forsman, Kevin O’Connell, Gary Emrich and Gary Huibregtse. “Covering Ground” addresses humankind’s complex relationship to the land and shared sky – propelled by the primary quest to harness and channel its natural energy resources. From the topical to the timeless; from the big science of the nuclear age to observations of the ways in which we set foot or make our mark on the planet, the exhibition offers a view of the ground already covered and territory yet-to-be-pursued.

New Sculpture by Linda Fleming and Katy Stone at Robsichon Gallery
May 13 - August 28, 2010
The the new exhibition Robischon showcases new artwork by two acclaimed contemporary American sculptors, Linda Fleming and Katy Stone. Linda Fleming rose to international prominence in the 1980’s with her complicated geometrical forms that comment on the physical substructure and modernity. Her most recent work has retained the same formal complexity, while shifting toward an aesthetic of organic curvilinearity, rather than angular geometry. Her exhibition at Robischon Gallery will feature small maquettes to large scale sculptural works in steel, chrome, wood, and felt. Fleming has an equally influential pedagogical legacy, instructing at Maryland Instituted College of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, and as the chair of the sculpture department at California College of Art. Katy Stone has been exhibiting extensively in the U.S. since the late 1990’s, including solo exhibitions at the Boise Art Museum and the Missoula Museum of Art. She apportions and refashions the visual lexicon of the natural world into complex, often brightly colored, sculptural installations, objects and collages. The artist regularly employs archival Durlar, painted in her sculptures, which complicates her massive formal arrangements with a sense of delicateness and ephemerality. The artist produces works in painted steel and painted aluminum.

Looking for the Face I Had Before the World Was Made: MCA DENVER
Closing: June 3, 2010
The curatorial debut of new MCA director Adam Lerner features 6 discrete exhibitions that focus on the metaphysical aspects of the human figure, examined through artistic representation. The eclectic group of artists demonstrate a comprehensive exploration of the exhibition's thematic premise through highly individualized treatments of the subject. These divergent approaches create a rich interdisciplinary forum that takes place within the autonomous galleries of the MCA. Exhibiting artists include: Michael Borremans, Samuel Beckett, Eric and Heather Chanshatz, Lorraine O'Grady, A.G. Rizozoli, William Stockman

Gary Komarin: Salina at Robischon Gallery
Opening Reception: Thurs., Jan. 21 (6-8 p.m.)
Robischon Gallery presents new paintings by New York artist Gary Komarin. Komarin's ideosyncratic canvases exhibit ABEX sensibilities informed by his former mentor Philip Guston. The works are situated on the cusp of pure abstraction, yet they retain a cryptic iconographic lexicon that questions the clearly defined ideological premise of the ABEX tradition. A crude charm underlies the unique formal qualities of this acclaimed painter's work. RG will also be presenting a group exhibition that will include paper works from the Dale Chisman Estate, sculpture by Manuel Neri, and paintings by Wendi Harford.
1-1-2010
A blue moon is the "extra" full moon in years that have thirteen full moons. Most years have twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra days accumulate, so every two or three years (7 times in the 19-year Metonic cycle), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon." Different definitions place the "extra" moon at different times.

The exhibition will feature monoprints and sculptural works by Stockholder, alongside a new body of floor-reliant sculpture by John McEnroe. Both artists have cultivated recognition for their innovative use of eclectic contemporary materials and their creative use of space. The sublime aesthetic compatibility of their work, in addition to their individual notoriety, makes this undisputedly the most compelling gallery exhibition of the year. It is also McEnroe's 1st exhibition with Robischon Gallery, after a long-standing exhibition history with Plus Gallery.

Matthew Buckingham: a Major Survey at MCA Denver
October 14-Jan. 10, 2010
Through the use of various media including film, photography, video, drawing and writing, Buckingham’s work investigates two main themes: history and time. Using these subjects, Buckingham evokes a personal connection or memory from the individual viewer. MCA Denver is pleased to present a major survey of many of his grippingly captivating projects; each that unfold a story and produce reflections on the past, present and future. About the artist, John Grant, curator of the exhibition, states, "Buckingham questions how histories are created; he investigates how data, documents and images are used to interpret and fabricate threads of understanding." Matthew Buckingham lives and works in New York City. Born in 1963 and brought up in Iowa, Buckingham has recently been featured in solo shows at leading contemporary art institutions such as Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain, and P.S. 1 in New York. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, received a BA from the University of Iowa in the renowned film production and film studies program, holds an MFA from Bard College and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. His work has been seen in one-person and group exhibitions around the world, including at ARC / Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Camden Arts Centre, London; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He was a 2003 recipient of the DAAD Artist in Berlin Fellowship. This exhibition has been curated for MCA Denver by John Grant, former Deputy Director of the museum. Grant has been following Matthew's work over the last 25 years and is captivated by the artist's ability to re-frame common perceptions of history, individuals and our place in time.

Stephen Batura at Robischon Gallery
Sept. 26th-Oct. 31st
Robischon Gallery presents new works by painter Stephen Batura from his series the Alameda Project. The paintings featured in Borrowing Time reconstruct photographic images from the archive of eccentric semi-professional local photographer Charles S. Lillybridge. The works in the exhibition are the culmination of Batura's Alameda Project, an eight year endevour into the Lillybridge archive. The prominent feature of the work is a nuanced consideration of the relationship between the photographic image and its influence on fine art painting.
Barneby Furnas at MCA Denver
Opening Reception: September 25th (6-8 p.m.)
Barnaby Furnas creates monumental images dripped, splashed and poured with a dark visceral red paint that suggests the bloody remnants of war. His creations are biblical in scale and intent, occasionally exceeding 30 feet in length. Born in 1973, his early artistic inclinations found him spray painting graffiti in the subway tunnels and rooftops of his native Philadelphia. His work blends this spectacular aesthetic with the traditions of Abstract Expressionism. To create his monumental Flood paintings, Furnas props and suspends his canvasses to create sloped planes. Balanced on a scaffold over the work, Furnas then douses, flings and pours paint across the surface. Furnas selected a group of Flood paintings for this exhibition at MCA Denver and will be creating a new work that he will paint on-site in the gallery.
Halim Alkarim-The Witness Archive
August 8, 2009-Sept. 19, 2009
The upcoming exhibition at Robischon will feature the work of Iraqi artist Halim Alkarim. Alkarim works across a broad range of media, including photography and textiles, to explore cultural issues relevant to the contemporary experience in the Middle East. Despite his work having a clear engagement with broader cultural considerations, much of his work is infused with reflections and associations that focus on very intimate personal experiences with the extreme political unrest within the Iraqi state during the 1980's and 1990's.
Alkarim presents a body of work in photography that engages with his experiences and remembrances of life under the political leadership of Saddam Hussein. Halim Alkarim has exhibited internationally for over 15 years at prestigious venues including Saatchi Gallery, and the Cairo Biennale.
Kevin O'Connell: Everything Comes Broken opens at MCA Denver
July 16, 2009-Oct. 4, 2009
The new exhibition of photography and video at MCA features new works from O'Connell's current investigation. The photographs at MCA offer a striking counterpoint to his solo exhibition at Robischon through a subtle redirection of their subject. Focusing on wind turbines, instead of decaying oil repositories, O'Connell furthers his examination of energy infrastructure as it relates to the physical landsacpe, land use, and imaging of western landscape. The two shows create an interesting corollary that looks at the physicality of renewable and non-renewable energy economies in the US. On view through Sunday, October 4th.
Kevin O'Connell, David Sharpe and Edie Winograde at Robischon

New exhibition of contemporary photography at the gallery featuring three unique perspectives in that engage with the subject and artistic tradition of American West. Opening reception: June 25th, from 6-8 p.m.
