Looking for the Face I Had Before the World Was Made: MCA DENVER

Opening Reception: January 29, 2009

The curatorial debut of new MCA director Adam Lerner features 6 discrete exhibitions that focus on the metaphysical aspects of the human figure, examined through artistic representation. The eclectic group of artists demonstrate a comprehensive exploration of the exhibition's thematic premise through highly individualized treatments of the subject. These divergent approaches create a rich interdisciplinary forum that takes place within the autonomous galleries of the MCA. Exhibiting artists include: Michael Borremans, Samuel Beckett, Eric and Heather Chanshatz, Lorraine O'Grady, A.G. Rizozoli, William Stockman

Gary Komarin: Salina at Robischon Gallery

Opening Reception: Thurs., Jan. 21 (6-8 p.m.)

Robischon Gallery presents new paintings by New York artist Gary Komarin. Komarin's ideosyncratic canvases exhibit ABEX sensibilities informed by his former mentor Philip Guston. The works are situated on the cusp of pure abstraction, yet they retain a cryptic iconographic lexicon that questions the clearly defined ideological premise of the ABEX tradition. A crude charm underlies the unique formal qualities of this acclaimed painter's work. RG will also be presenting a group exhibition that will include paper works from the Dale Chisman Estate, sculpture by Manuel Neri, and paintings by Wendi Harford.

2010

1-1-2010

A blue moon is the "extra" full moon in years that have thirteen full moons. Most years have twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra days accumulate, so every two or three years (7 times in the 19-year Metonic cycle), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon." Different definitions place the "extra" moon at different times.

Matthew Buckingham: a Major Survey at MCA Denver

October 14-Jan. 10, 2010

Through the use of various media including film, photography, video, drawing and writing, Buckingham’s work investigates two main themes: history and time. Using these subjects, Buckingham evokes a personal connection or memory from the individual viewer. MCA Denver is pleased to present a major survey of many of his grippingly captivating projects; each that unfold a story and produce reflections on the past, present and future. About the artist, John Grant, curator of the exhibition, states, "Buckingham questions how histories are created; he investigates how data, documents and images are used to interpret and fabricate threads of understanding." Matthew Buckingham lives and works in New York City. Born in 1963 and brought up in Iowa, Buckingham has recently been featured in solo shows at leading contemporary art institutions such as Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain, and P.S.1 in New York. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, received a BA from the University of Iowa in the renowned film production and film studies program, holds an MFA from Bard College and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. His work has been seen in one-person and group exhibitions around the world, including at ARC / Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Camden Arts Centre, London; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He was a 2003 recipient of the DAAD Artist in Berlin Fellowship. This exhibition has been curated for MCA Denver by John Grant, former Deputy Director of the museum. Grant has been following Matthew's work over the last 25 years and is captivated by the artist's ability to re-frame common perceptions of history, individuals and our place in time.

Stephen Batura at Robischon Gallery

Sept. 26th-Oct. 31st

Robischon Gallery presents new works by painter Stephen Batura from his series the Alameda Project. The paintings featured in Borrowing Time reconstruct photographic images from the archive of eccentric semi-professional local photographer Charles S. Lillybridge. The works in the exhibition are the culmination of Batura's Alameda Project, an eight year endevour into the Lillybridge archive. The prominent feature of the work is a nuanced consideration of the relationship between the photographic image and its influence on fine art painting.

Barneby Furnas at MCA Denver

Opening Reception: September 25th (6-8 p.m.)

Barnaby Furnas creates monumental images dripped, splashed and poured with a dark visceral red paint that suggests the bloody remnants of war. His creations are biblical in scale and intent, occasionally exceeding 30 feet in length. Born in 1973, his early artistic inclinations found him spray painting graffiti in the subway tunnels and rooftops of his native Philadelphia. His work blends this spectacular aesthetic with the traditions of Abstract Expressionism. To create his monumental Flood paintings, Furnas props and suspends his canvasses to create sloped planes. Balanced on a scaffold over the work, Furnas then douses, flings and pours paint across the surface. Furnas selected a group of Flood paintings for this exhibition at MCA Denver and will be creating a new work that he will paint on-site in the gallery.

Halim Alkarim-The Witness Archive

August 8, 2009-Sept. 19, 2009

The upcoming exhibition at Robischon will feature the work of Iraqi artist Halim Alkarim. Alkarim works across a broad range of media, including photography and textiles, to explore cultural issues relevant to the contemporary experience in the Middle East. Despite his work having a clear engagement with broader cultural considerations, much of his work is infused with reflections and associations that focus on very intimate personal experiences with the extreme political unrest within the Iraqi state during the 1980's and 1990's.

Alkarim presents a body of work in photography that engages with his experiences and remembrances of life under the political leadership of Saddam Hussein. Halim Alkarim has exhibited internationally for over 15 years at prestigious venues including Saatchi Gallery, and the Cairo Biennale.

Kevin O'Connell: Everything Comes Broken opens at MCA Denver

July 16, 2009-Oct. 4, 2009

The new exhibition of photography and video at MCA features new works from O'Connell's current investigation. The photographs at MCA offer a striking counterpoint to his solo exhibition at Robischon through a subtle redirection of their subject. Focusing on wind turbines, instead of decaying oil repositories, O'Connell furthers his examination of energy infrastructure as it relates to the physical landsacpe, land use, and imaging of western landscape. The two shows create an interesting corollary that looks at the physicality of renewable and non-renewable energy economies in the US. On view through Sunday, October 4th.
